Crossfit Black Bear was founded in 2012 as a non-profit CrossFit affiliate at the University of Maine.
Working with the University we were able to offer free classes to full time University students and community members active at the Recreation Center.
We were founded with the mission to make exceptional programming and coaching accessible to the every University student and community member.
In Summer 2016, CrossFit Black Bear became the first non-profit CrossFit affiliate in Maine to become a commercial affiliate.
This was only possible with the support of our members who made CrossFit Black Bear a successful program at the University.
We are now located in the Old Town Plaza (between the Hannaford and YMCA). Only 5 minutes from the University of Maine at Orono campus, and 6.5 miles from Bangor off I-95 N.

Bonjour! My name is Lucas. I grew up in Bordeaux, France and I arrived in this beautiful country 4 years ago. Before my life plan brought me to the United States, I was a full time firefighter in France for over 8 years. While in this position I was also a Fire behavior instructor and trained/certified my fellow firefighters on how to best handle the extreme physical and mental stresses encountered while on shift. Through this experience I learned how much I enjoy helping and teaching others as well as learning about other people.
I started Crossfit in 2014 at “197 box”, the first Crossfit gym that opened in France. As a crossfitter I am particularly passionate about gymnastics. For me, Crossfit is a tool to help us be happy and healthy, but above all, Crossfit allows you to find a fitness family or community. You will meet wonderful people that become your friends and motivators, and will endure the hard work with you. Oh, by the way…I have a “little” accent, so if you don’t know what I am saying, just ask me!

Hi everyone, I’m Jared! I graduated in 2017 from the University of Maine with a degree in kinesiology and exercise science.
I’ve been interested in the fitness world for quite a while. When I was 20 years old, I started working out, but no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. The struggle was REAL. Eventually, I found CrossFit Black Bear when it was just a free class at the campus rec center, and I’ve been hooked on CrossFit ever since. As I’ve learned more about the way the body works and moves, I’ve found a real passion for mobility, flexibility, and recovery techniques and methods. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has thought, “If only I could recover faster, these stairs wouldn’t suck QUITE as much!”
When I’m not studying or getting a WOD in at CFBB, I’m probably trying to get outdoors to enjoy the beautiful Maine woods, or spending time with family and friends. I love the community we’re building here at CrossFit Black Bear, and I’m so excited to learn and grow in this new role here. My name is Heather Fournier. I graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in Exercise Science. I have always had a love for fitness and sports. I was a competitive gymnast from the age of 8 to 15. As I finished competing I immediately stepped into a coaching role. In high school I fell in love with track + field but specifically pole vaulting. I pole vaulted for UMaine for 4 seasons but ultimately work and an ankle surgery ended that journey. I continued to coach gymnastics from age 15 to present. I have grown in my role from Gymnastics Coach to Gymnastics Director and now to Senior Program Director at the Old Town Orono YMCA. I am excited to share my love of gymnastics with our CrossFit family and apply my knowledge to our CrossFit workouts to help us all crush goals!"

Hello! I'm Peter, I'm coach and resident nutritionist at CrossFit Black Bear. I have a Bachelor's of Nutrition from the University of Maine. I've been doing CrossFit since 2010 and got my first level 1 certification in 2017. I've dabbled in powerlifting, strongman, and Olympic lifting. I'm here to assist with all of your nutritional needs from advice to meal prep planning. I'm excited to help you reach your goals both inside and outside the gym!
